As the European Medicines Agency searches for a new head amidst rumbles of disquiet over the recently departed Thomas Lönngren’s new role, Europe looks set to fill another high profile vacancy with the appointment of Richard Bergstrom as President of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA).
Although EFPIA has yet to officially announce it, the news that Bergstrom — who for nine years has been Director General of the Swedish pharma industry association, LIF — is to take over from Brian Ager has been circling cyberspace for some weeks. More recently, LIF’s Chairman Steinar Høeg, has announced that the appointment “is in recognition of Richard’s leadership and of the change process driven both in Sweden and abroad.”
Bergstrom is widely regarded as a ‘colourful’ character and has been a great success at LIF. It will be interesting to see what he brings to a Europe-wide role that has been, for ten years, under the more restrained control of the departing Ager.
